In de First Aid and Resuscitation Guidelines 2011 wordt gesproken over de zogenaamde 'general approach to the victim', ofwel de standaard benadering van het slachtoffer. Deze benadering overlapt grotendeels met de 'Vijf regels' van het Oranje Kruis en de benaderingsmethoden die in andere opleidingen gebruikt worden.
